UTA-Do Africa Cities Workshop, Daressalam, Tanzania (2024)
The 3rd UTA-Do Africa Cities workshop was held from 29th January to 2nd February, 2024, in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Among the attendees were Nthoki D. Nyamai, a researcher at IPS, and Girma Mulu Alemu, a Doctoral researcher at IPS and Ardhi University. UTA-Do emanates from the sheng dialect, a fusion of Swahili and English translating to ‘what are you going to do about it?’

The workshop brought together scholars, activists, researchers and artists to delve into critical urban issues affecting African cities. It was held in collaboration with Ardhi University and Friedrich-Ebert Stiftung, Tanzania Office. Over a period of five days, the participants engaged with diverse urban topics including decolonization of knowledge, the impact of techno-capitalism in Africa, the dynamics of gendered cities and the role of activism.

Beyond scholarly discourse, the workshop facilitated cultural exchange through creative expression. Writing workshops on de-colonial narratives were complemented by immersive experiences in art and film to highlight the multifaceted dimensions of African cultures and perspectives on globalisation and agency.
