Invited speech of Raffael Beier at the 13th congress of the African Union of Architects in Rabat.
From 4th to 5th July, the African Union of Architects held its 13th annual congress in Rabat, Morocco. The congress brought together architects and urban planners from more than 40 different countries mostly in Africa and took place in Rabat’s Mohammed V Theatre. The local organiser of the congress, the Conseil National de l'Ordre des Architectes du Maroc, invited Raffael Beier to give a speech together with Wafae Belarbi from the National School of Architecture in Rabat. In their joint contribution in French, they shared insights into their work on peripheral urbanisation in Casablanca and outlined new pathways to rethink informal space making in Morocco and beyond.
The speech was partly inspired by Raffael Beier’s recently published essay Ordinary Neighbourhoods, which is now available open access by Planning Theory: https://doi.org/10.1177%2F14730952221076624
