On April 03, 2023 Raffael Beier and colleagues will hold a seminar at the CFEE in Addis Ababa

Seminar: "Large-scale housing programs and the people missing in them: Why some people in Addis Ababa prefer not to stay in their 'condominiums'" by and with Raffael Beier (TU Dortmund University), Marie Bridonneau (Paris Nanterre University/CFEE), Seble Fekadu Deyaso (Ambo University).

Date: Monday, April 3, 2023, 10 a.m.

Location: CFEE (Centre français des études éthiopiennes), Berhanu Abebe Library, Addis Ababa.

The presented research is part of a larger research project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) that focuses on large-scale standardized housing projects in Africa, focusing on Ethiopia, Morocco, and South Africa. The research project focuses on the reasons behind people's decision not to occupy their government-provided housing. Where do they move to and to what extent has the housing program facilitated or hindered their access to adequate and affordable housing?

In addition to explaining the conceptual framework of the research project, this, seminar presents preliminary findings from our own biographical interviews with about 30 individuals who rented, sold, or were unable to occupy their condominiums in the Addis Ababa metropolitan region. In March 2023, we identified our interviewees through primarily face-to-face contacts and snowball sampling in many different parts of Addis Ababa, including central locations such as Kirkos and Haya Hulet, and peripheral locations such as Koye Feche and Tulu Dimtu.
