San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima, Peru (2022)

Nick Nowara, together with project partners of the Universidad Nacional de Ingenería, Lima successfully applied for a research grant within the Peruvian funding programme "Concurso de Investigación 2023".

The research project deals with individual housing strategies in the incremental settlement of San Juan de Lurigancho, Lima and will be carried out by an interdisciplinary team. The focus is on how low-income private households finance incremental housing. In addition, the formal specifications and social regulations of the construction process will be investigated in order to understand decision-making processes and construction developments.

Nick Nowara will conduct interviews in the neighbourhoods during a first field stay in May/June 2023 and generate basic knowledge for the planned joint DFG research project "Building and Financing Incremental Housing in Lima, Peru - Practices, Material Flows and everyday Governance". The DFG application is still being reviewed and a decision is expected in summer.

The title of the joint research project is "Periferias metropolitanas expandidas de Lima: Estrategias del habitar popular y financiamiento de la vivienda en San Juan de Lurigancho" (in English: The growing metropolitan periphery of Lima: Incremental housing strategies and housing finance in San Juan de Lurigancho).
